As long as you have the desire and willingness to listen without judgment, we believe the following steps can guide you to helping someone from their breaking point to a turning point.

Understanding and Helping the Suicidal Person
If you or someone you know is at risk of suicide or has stated suicidal thoughts, it is important to get the facts and take appropriate action.

Listen and Take It Seriously!
Seventy-five percent of all suicides give some warning of their intentions to a friend or family member. All suicide threats and attempts must be taken seriously.

Be Aware of the Warning Signs
The American Association of Suicidology has developed an easy mnemonic to remember the warning signs:

IS PATH WARM?

Ideation - statements about suicide or wanting it to be over
Substance Abuse

Purposelessness - not important
Anxiety
Trapped - feeling
Hopelessness

Withdrawal or lsolation
Anger
Recklessness
Mood Changes - sudden

Seek Professional Help
If you recognize, witness, hear or see someone exhibiting the warning signs, please seek help as soon as possible by contacting a mental health professional or calling our crisis helpline.

Other Ways to Help
The American Association of Suicidology offers tips for helping someone who is severely depressed or may be contemplating suicide.
  1. Talk openly, directly and matter-of-factly about depression or suicide. It is a myth that talking about either of these issues will cause someone to attempt suicide.
  2. Be willing to listen and accept expressions of feelings is very important.
  3. Be non-judgemental. Dont't lecture on the value of life.
  4. Get involved and show interest and support.
  5. NEVER dare someone.
  6. Don't act shocked
  7. Dont't be sworn to secrecy. Seek support as soon as possible
  8. Offer hope that alternatives are available but don't be glib
  9. Take action. Remove any possible means such as sharp objects, guns or pills.
  10. Call our crisis line or the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273 - TALK ( 8255) for help.
